I very much like Changeling: The Dreaming’s mortal threat to fae life being banality for this reason; their take on it is that a lack of imagination and curiosity is actively harmful to fae, even being in proximity to someone boring can cause physical symptoms and emotional distress. If they’re exposed to banality for long enough, it will overcome them and they’ll forget that they’re fae at all, and because fae are more magical than biological, the act of forgetting isn’t just amnesia, their physical form forgets that it’s fae too and becomes mortal.

Of course they lash out, of course they’re willing to do unbelievably cruel, twisted things to avoid that, because it’s not just boredom at stake, they could lose their memory, their personality, their immortality, and to top it all off, then be forced to regress into what is from their perspective a lower level of sentience. Imagine if everytime you went too long without mental stimulation, you ran the risk of turning into a dog for the rest of your (now very short) existence and not being able to remember that you were ever anything else, it’s completely horrifying, but it’s their reality.
