My comment:
Practically everything you describe about how the book handles the blind lead's perception of the world before and after gaining vision, and the treatment of Donnie...
It's so profoundly... lazy? Like I've put more thought into blind fanfic characters who weren't meant to be any kind of representation. I wrote a whole "blind Naruto wakes up reincarnated into his younger self and doesn't even consider opening his eyes and realizing his vision is back because he's so used to not using it, and just goes about his day by touch and scent and hearing alone" scene that I trashed as not going anywhere and I feel like I put more thought into the blind experience than this published writer.

Meanwhile our "hero" is out here noticing countertops the second he walks into a kitchen and marveling at giant TV screens and reading stuff without ever learning how with just... magic. Maybe it could be interesting if Henry could also project the meaning of the worlds and Phillip marveled at how squiggles on a page could carry meaning just like sound could, because it was something he'd only ever heard about before and never experienced... but no. We don't even get that much thought put in.

And just. Donnie. Big and scary but friendly. People are shocked when he speaks. Phillip wonders if he has free will or is just following them out of loyalty.
I've not heard anything so far that's convinced me that replacing him with a Rottweiler would affect the plot any. The author certainly doesn't seem to be treating him as a full human being.

And hoo, the girls. Added because you have to have girls right? And then they just vanish because considering their perspectives and fleshing them out as full characters would be haaaard.

I know there's good reasons to be upset about ableism and misogyny and such but honestly? Even though I have some behavioral and learning disabilities, and increasing physical ones as I age... what offends me the most about this book comes from being a hobbiest writer. It's. Just. So... sloppy. And lazily written. Generic details (every kid's dream!) and where's it's not redundant it's sparse. It smacks of someone who just doesn't CARE that much about the subjects in his writing? The characters, the worldbuilding, the disabilities being portrayed, the plot itself. It's just... so irritating. Shallow. Shallow's a good word. An author who never bothered to look deeper into anything.
