My comment:
Oh. Man. This fanfic.
Okay, I started reading this waaaay back in the day, starting when it was only a few chapters long. I was in a fricking Yahoo group led by the author.
I was vaguely aware of the Less Wrong community existing, at some point? But I didn't know this author was the head of all that. I thought he was just one more of the people in it. I never really got into his blog. I read the fricking sheep story? That seems like it's going to have a point but then loses the plot somewhere and wraps up with a little "and if you don't understand this, it's because you're not smart enough yet" bow.
I don't remember when I stopped reading the fic but I remember just... losing enthusiasm for it over time. It kept wandering around acting like it was going somewhere and then not going anywhere, and I got bored. I was also being increasingly put off by the OTHER rationalism fic I was running into? Like. I have a STRONG tolerance for weird kink stuff in my fics but when people are presenting the weird kink stuff as "no, in an ENLIGHTENED society-" it gets... really uncomfortable. Like okay. I don't care if you want to write even the strangest and least ethical fantasies in your fiction. It's fiction. It's fake. It's all just text. But. Boy howdy do I not like it when it feels like the author is trying to sell their kinks as the ideal way we should structure our lives.
And okay, yeah. That's not what THIS fic is about. But. It was definitely I kept stumbling into reading rationalist fics...
Oh. Pausing again because I remembered another trait of these folks.
The way they framed anyone who didn't value immortality as insane. Literally, they'd call it explicitly that. And okay, I think being able to make humans stop dying of the ravages of old age would be cool. If there was a(n ethical) way to make myself ageless, I would do it. But they would write ideas that were just. Way beyond the pale. Like I remember one fanfic where they were putting out ideas like "what if we start kidnapping all the humans who are close to death and give them the immortality treatment without any regard for their wishes or personal beliefs? Because we definitely can't take the time for informed consent in this situation. And besides, anyone who'd turn this down is just crazy anyway."
Bluh.
Anyway that's what I remember on this topic.
