Very sensible. I'd probably say, "Excuse me, I'm just passing through," like I do with most wildlife.
My encounters with wolves have been in zoos or wildlife parks, etc. I greet the wolves and they greet me. A polite greeting between stranger wolves is to look, look aside, and then look back -- indicating that you have status but do not wish to challenge for territory or other resources. On one occasion, the wolves hadn't been visible, but one promptly appeared to patrol their perimeter and greet me. :D Since the wolves I've met have generally seemed to recognize me as a funny-shaped wolf who can manage basic communication, I would't be surprised if free-range wolves did the same.
It's always good to know the polite greetings for various species. I struggle to remember anything but the "hello!" head bob for cats. But if you do that to dogs they think you're asking to play.
The only wolves I've ever known have been zoo wolves and a wolfdog of uncertain percentage, none of which has been since I've been an adult...
I did see a deer today, though! I went out for a doctor's appointment and it was grazing on the hill by the clinic. I didn't try to communicate with it, just looked and enjoyed seeing a wild animal. It's good for the soul to have peaceful encounters with wildlife. :3
It's cool to hear you've been able to manage through basic communication with wild wolves. I try sometimes with the crows and ravens around here? But it's hard when there's always cats in and out of my window spooking them. They know I offer food, but I also hang around with bad company. :p
