That would be a good way to use it, filling a cistern, so that the intermittent pumping wouldn't slow down usage.

Plus once you get the water up there, you can then use gravity to direct it back down to other places -- even a slight slope will move it around the castle or wherever.

Yeah, if you lifted into an irrigation system, or even used that as a spillway from the cistern. The slow flow wouldn't matter, because you could just leave it on.

Drinking water first, then things like wash water. But as long as you don't use toxic soap or anything, you can dump the wash water into a basin that drains into the garden or a filtering bed such as reeds or water irises.
